Description

Elizabeth "Libbie" Custer: A Two-Piece Mohair Suit Dress with Family Provenance. This beautiful outfit consists of a long fitted skirt with black braid trim and thread buttons, accompanied by a Spanish-style short jacket similarly adorned. The cloth is a fine weave of gray and light green thread. Overall display condition is excellent, with a few very minor small holes and tears which detract minimally.

The dress was obtained by famed Custer collector Dr. Lawrence Frost in 1962 from Mariam Custer, who attests in a descriptive affidavit (included) that it was given to her directly by Elizabeth Bacon Custer.

For those fascinated by Custer's story, this dress is far more than a minor association piece. Libbie Custer was her husband's true love and his life partner in the fullest sense for the all-too-brief twelve years of their marriage. After her widowhood, Libbie spent the next half century zealously guarding her husbands' reputation and burnishing his image. She would never remarry, of course. Whatever his faults, George Armstrong Custer would have been a hard act to follow. Because it is almost impossible to think of Custer without conjuring up images of his lovely, feisty mate, Libbie Custer certainly deserves a place in the pantheon of genuine Legends of the Old West.
