Description
Eli Whitney, Jr., Quarter-Plate Daguerreotype, circa 1850, featuring the manufacturer of the Colt Walker revolver and the only son of the inventor of the cotton gin. When Whitney Jr. (1820-1894) sat for this photo, he was a major firearms manufacturer with two plants in Connecticut. The daguerreotype's union case exhibits moderate wear; brass hinges are in good working condition; with an embossed velvet interior.Earlier on January 5, 1847, Whitney Jr. signed a contract with Samuel Colt to manufacture 1,000 of the new Colt Walker revolvers (a product of the collaboration between Colt and Samuel Walker of Texas) for the U.S. Department of War. (Colt had no armory at the time.) In all, Whitney Jr. produced 1,100 Colt Walkers, a .44-caliber six shot which weighed 4.5 pounds and measured 15.5 inches in length-the largest revolver made in the U.S.
