Description
[Texas Rangers]. Benjamin McCulloch Half-Plate Salt Print, circa 1856 , 4.75" x 6". This original, from which most extant portraits of McCulloch were copied, came from a salt print album created by Jesse Whitehurst of Virginia, one of the first professional photographers active in the southern United States.The famous Texas Ranger, well dressed in this important photograph, first came to Texas after deciding to follow his neighbor, David Crockett, south to join the Texan Army. McCulloch arrived in 1836, immediately after the fall of the Alamo, and joined Sam Houston's forces as they retreated into east Texas. He commanded one of the famed "Twin Sister" cannons during the Battle of San Jacinto, and was field commissioned 1st lieutenant by Houston. In spite of his success he soon left the army and joined the Texas Rangers, serving as 1st lieutenant under John C. Hays and playing a major role in the Mexican War as chief of scouts under Zachary Taylor. He gained national recognition for his daring expeditions, and for his contributions to the Battles of Monterey and Buena Vista, earned a subsequent field promotion to major. In 1852, he began serving as a Texas Marshal for the Eastern District of Texas for several years. In 1858 he was instrumental in quelling violence between the U.S. Government and Brigham Young and the Latter-Day Saints in Utah in his capacity as a peace commissioner. At the outbreak of the Civil War, McCulloch entered the Confederate Army as a colonel and was later commissioned brigadier general by Jefferson Davis, who assigned him command of the Indian Territory. On March 7, 1862, McCulloch was killed during the Battle of Pea Ridge while verifying the enemy position. It is widely believed that his sudden death began a rapid downward spiral for Confederate forces in Arkansas, culminating in the successful Union occupation of the state. McCulloch is laid to rest in Austin, Texas. Mounting remnants and penciled notations on verso.
