Franklin D. Roosevelt: Inaugural Addresses of Franklin D. Roosevelt, Presentation Copy Inscribed and Signed. Washington, DC: U.S. Government Printing Office, December 1943. Limited edition of 100 copies of which this is #75. Presentation copy inscribed and signed by Franklin D. Roosevelt to his friend, Toi Bachelder, who served as the President's primary secretary from 1933-1945, "For Toi, with the affectionate regards of Franklin D. Roosevelt, Christmas 1943." Small, slim quarto. 24 pages. Vellum-backed marbled paper boards. Gilt-stamped dark blue leather spine label. Top edge gilt. In original slipcase.Toi Bachelder, also a polio victim, first met the future President at a Warm Springs, Georgia natural spa in 1925, when she was fourteen years old. She was assigned to be his bridge partner and the two became fast friends from that moment. She joined the White House staff following Roosevelt's inauguration in 1933 and continued working there for Presidents Truman, Eisenhower, Kennedy, and Johnson, before retiring in 1967. Lyndon Johnson was so impressed with her service that he gave her a private retirement party in the White House.
These specially bound copies were given as gifts exclusively to the President's closest friends, family, and select members of the White House staff. A desirable copy with a warm, personal association to President Roosevelt. Accompanied by a small color photograph of Ms. Bachelder holding this book. According to our research, only three other inscribed copies found offered for auction in the past forty years.
Condition: Spine crown pulled and vellum split, small chip at the upper spine label, tiny stain at the lower spine edge. Slipcase shows light scuffs, rubbing, and small stain on the lower fore-edge.
