Description

Civil War: Cartoon Titled, "The Dis-United States Or The Southern Confederacy". The leaders of the confederate states are shown eliciting requirements and negotiating points to each other as they discuss the terms of their alliance. Three are shown seated on cotton bales. South Carolina is seated upon an African American, whip in hand claiming enforcer status in the confederacy. Florida is astride a boat demanding the lights on the coast be put out "to facilitate the wrecking business." Louisiana sits upon a keg demanding heavy duties to be levied on all foreign trade to make up for losses to the North. This undated print by Currier and Ives measures 13.5" x 17".

Condition: Edge roughness and several tears along the margins which have been repaired on verso by a glue adhesive. Overall fine to very fine condition.
