William McKinley et al: Six Classic Mechanical Campaign Badges From 1896-1900. Here are 6 popular mechanical lapel devices for William McKinley and William Jennings Bryan. (1) & (2) A pair of brass shell beetles or bees with articulated wings that spring open to reveal portraits of the candidates. (3) A 1 1/4" gilt brass flag which opens to portraits of McKinley & Hobart is in superb condition with original pin on reverse. (4) A 1 1/4" gilt GOP elephant pops open to an illustration of a pair of ladies bloomers with a chastity padlock, and the clever message, "For Protection". (5) A figural character with a broad smile opens his lower jaw to reveal his message of "16 to 1". (6) A 1 1/8" brass coffin charm inscribed on the outside, "Bill McKinley Nov. 3, 1896" will open on election day to find a figure resting inside with message inscribed on inside lid, "A Friend of Trusts and British Gold".

Condition: The brass finish on four pieces have tarnish from age. The Bryan bug and figural character are missing the pins on reverse. All other items have their pins on the backs save for the coffin which was designed as a charm. Both bugs are operational although one wing on the Bryan bug sticks. The paper inserts on the GOP elephant and figural pieces are both in bright excellent condition.
