Ulysses S. Grant: 1868 RNC Wooden Gavel and Bonus. 13" wooden gavel covered in brown and slate gray paper. A partial label is still attached, reading "... the Republican [Chica]go at the first..." A notation in the DeWitt inventory indicates it was used by General J. R. Hawley to call the Republican Convention to order in 1868. It was acquired by DeWitt from Hawley's daughter. Sold together with a wooden 13" billy-club with raised carvings (animals, water well, Seal of Rhode Island, Masonic symbols and the inscription "U. S. Grant. E Pluribus Unum.")
