Description

[John C. Frémont]: Currier & Ives Cartoon. The first Republican candidate, John Charles Frémont, appears headed for Salt River in this medium folio lithograph 13.25 x 17.75" published by Nathaniel Currier [uncredited] in 1856. Titled: "Col. Fremont's Last Grand Exploring Expedition in 1856." Seward leads Greeley and Frémont, astride the Abolition Nag, towards political oblivion. Henry Ward Beecher offers some of his famous Beecher Rifles. A mountain man admonishes "Ah! Colonel, you've got into a bad crowd - you'll find that dead Horse on the prairie is better for the Constitution, than Abolition Soup or Wooly head stew in the White house." Seward and Greeley are depicted as political movers-and-shakers, as they would be in 1860 once again.

Condition: Scattered toning and stains with wide borders, one tape repair on verso.
