Description

[James Buchanan]: 1856 Currier Cartoon. Medium folio lithograph 13.5" x 18" published by Nathaniel Currier in 1856, titled "The Democratic Platform." It depicts Brother Jonathan, Thomas Hart Benton, Franklin Pierce, John Van Buren, Martin Van Buren, a Southern planter and his slave. Buchanan is criticized for the pro-slavery nature of the Democratic platform adopted at Cincinnati. The politicians are willing to overlook it, in hope of some political advantage or future benefit.
