Description

Andrew Jackson: National Bank Cartoon with Texas Reference. 17" x 13.5" cartoon by H. R. Robinson titled "Uncle Sam Sick With La Grippe." Uncle Sam is portrayed as sickly and resting. Around him are Andrew Jackson (imitating Benjamin Franklin), Thomas Hart Benton, and Martin Van Buren as "Aunty Matty." Nicholas Biddle can be seen outside the window, and an eagle states, "I must fly to Texas for I shall be starved out here." Note Washington in pieces, his head having fallen from the column reading, "Pater Patriæ." An early use of the personification Uncle Sam. Likely published 1834-1836.

Condition: 1.5" tear on bottom, chipping top right edge, mounting hinges and paper remnants on verso.
