Description
Jacqueline Kennedy: Autograph Letter Signed. Four pages of a bifolium on Merrywood letterhead with original transmittal cover, 5.25" x 6.75", McLean, Virginia; [June 14, 1954]. A letter addressed to Millard A. Dorsey, an African-American teacher who lent the Kennedys money to go see a movie. She writes, "You obviously must think us the most ungrateful couple in the world & one who never pays their debts. I couldn't have been more touched by the way you lent us money to go to the movies & neither could my husband - but when we got home we couldn't find the piece of paper he wrote your address on & it took a week of rifling through his pockets to find it. Please forgive us the long delay & thank you so much for being the kindest man in Washington on F street last week - or in Washington - or the USA period. I do hope we shall meet again soon. I wish it would be when you were trying to get into the movies & had forgotten to bring enough money so we could help you have a pleasant evening the way you helped us." Signed, "Very sincerely, Jacqueline Kennedy."An accompanying newspaper article offers Dorsey's perspective of the events. It reads, in part, "Millard A. Dorsey...said he was standing in line at the Palace Theater at Thirteenth and F streets M.W. in the first week of June, 1954, when he noticed the man in front of him searching through his pockets. 'I recognized him as Mr. Kennedy because he reminded me of Jimmie Stewart,' Mr. Dorsey said. 'He had $1.85 but the tickets cost $2. I offered to lend him the 15 cents, and he insisted that I give him my name and address. He wrote it down on a scrap of paper.'" By 1954, Kennedy had already reached national recognition for his time in the House of Representatives and the Senate.
Condition: Heavily toned with offsetting to the first and fourth pages. Creased along folds with minor separations along creases at the center fold and the right margins.
