Description

The Evening Journal: Extra from the Infamous Great Chicago Fire. Described here as "The Great Calamity of the Age!" this 9" x 13.375" broadside dramatically recounts the toll of the devastating destruction exacted by the voracious flames, which as of the one p.m. update, is still in progress. From theaters and churches to business houses and homes, the rapidly spreading fire consumed them all. Making matters worse, the City Water Works was added to the "...carnival of flame...by which calamity the firemen [were] rendered helpless to make the least endeavor to arrest the onward march of the devouring element." The article ends on a hopeful note, assuring the reader that trains with free engines and men are on the way. Information and advertising on the Board of Trade make up the lower-right side and corner. Fold marks are present, with the bottom right corner and edge exhibiting a deep crease. Light toning is throughout, with only a few very minor tears at the edges. In overall great condition-an excellent opportunity to own a piece of such tragic history. As a note we have been told that there are only three other examples known. At the Newberry Library [i.e. the Graff copy], Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Knox College.
