Description

John F. Kennedy: Pen used to Sign a Reading Copy of His Inaugural Address. Lucite and black plastic Esterbrook fountain pen measuring 7" long. An accompanying letter of provenance from the President's personal secretary, Evelyn Lincoln, offers a firsthand account of the pen's usage. She writes, in part, "Shortly after our late President John F. Kennedy took office in 1961 he had an appointment with former President Harry Truman. After bidding Mr. Truman goodbye on the north portico, he came into my office. Noticing the reading copy of his Inaugural Address on my desk, he said 'I read the other day that one of the former Presidents was offered $75,000 for his Inaugural Address, Mrs. Lincoln, give me a pen so I can sign mine', which I did. It was a pen from my desk. After he signed it he added 'Here keep this $75,000 for me,', as he handed the pen back to me." The Inaugural Address signed by Kennedy now resides in the John F. Kennedy Library in Boston.

Kennedy's 1961 Inaugural Address is best remembered for the iconic line: "My fellow Americans: ask not what your country can do for you - ask what you can do for your country." In spite of its lasting impact, it was the only reference to domestic affairs made by Kennedy. The remainder of the president's fourteen-minute speech focused almost entirely on the Cold War, promoting the idea of peaceful international relations between the US and the Soviet Union while simultaneously presenting America as a formidable global force.
