Description

[Richard Nixon]: Secret Service Uniform. During Nixon's days in the White House, the Secret Service had a special uniform for use during formal "State" functions. The uniforms were order by the President in 1970, prior to a visit by British Prime Minister Harold Wilson. Inspired by European honor guards that Nixon has seen during his visits abroad, the uniforms featured "double-breasted white tunics, starred epaulets, gold piping, draped braid and tall plastic/faux leather hats [made by Starburst Industries] decorated with a large White House crest." The innovation was largely ridiculed in the press, resulting in their recall after a mere two weeks of service. The uniform we are offering includes the hat (sans badge) and a size 32 wool & satin-lined jacket or tunic, also lacking the brass Secret Service badge. One sleeve has an embroidered patch with the Great Seal of the United States.
