Description

John F. Kennedy: Rare "Give The Key To Kennedy" Button. This is one example from a set of Kennedy buttons known as "The Big Four." It is rumored to have been pointed out that a family friend brought all four sample buttons up to Hyannis, Ma. to show them to Kennedy patriarch, Joseph P. Kennedy, Sr. When Kennedy saw the buttons, he became quite angry. He is said to have stated, "My son is going to be the next President of the United States! You can't use ugly pictures like this!" He was likely referring to the "I'm Gone for John" button. He also found the "Jack Kennedy" on the Democracy button objectionable, stating, "Nobody calls the next President Jack-except his family!" It is said Kennedy threw the buttons across the room, saying he never wanted to see them again. The button measures 3 1/2" with the black and white profile of Kennedy facing left, the White House appearing in the background.

Condition: A small 0.375" long surface scratch located over the roof of the White House. A light printing smudge on the white border, as made, under the celluloid surface at 8 and 9 o'clock. Otherwise, the button displays in excellent condition.
