Description

Charlie McCarthy Ventriloquist Dummy Personally Gifted to Rudy Vallee by Edgar Bergen!
19" tall ventriloquist's dummy of "Charlie McCarthy", used by the famous radio and film personality Edgar Bergen (father of Candice Bergen) during his long career. The head, hands and feet are made of solid wood. The hat is felt and the clothing is cotton and wool. A string at the back of the head, when pulled downward, opens and closes the mouth. The duo of Bergen & McCarthy had a running feud with W. C. Fields who would threaten to send McCarthy to a sawmill if he didn't cease his insults. The pair made the "big time" when they debuted on "The Rudy Vallee Show" on December 17, 1936. Charlie McCarthy would become one of the most familiar "personalities" in the popular culture of the day. Another Charlie McCarthy dummy used by Bergen was donated to the Smithsonian in November 1980. A Letter of Provenance from Vallee's nephew (the only "issue from three siblings") dated May 15, 2017 states he inherited this delightful item from his uncle upon Rudy's death in 1986.
