Description

Harry S Truman: The Very Rare "Eddie's Friend" Oval Pinback. The slogan refers to Eddie Jacobsen, Truman's partner in the haberdashery business before he embarked on his political career. Jacobsen was Jewish, and this was an uncommon partnership in the American Midwest in the 1920s, when the Klan was at its zenith. This button was undoubtedly intended to remind Jewish voters of Truman's personal history. They are extremely rare, appearing only occasionally on the market. The first example we handled was sold in the 2008 APIC National Convention auction. It was from the Kenton Broyles collection, and the plate example from the Hake book. After fierce bidding, that specimen fetched $21,510, almost certainly a record both for a Truman button and for a political slogan pin. This is the very same example. It measures 1" across and is in outstanding condition - clean, bright and perfectly-centered.
