Description
[Anti-Andrew Jackson] "The Rats Leaving" Cartoon with Extra Bonus Cartoon. (1) President Jackson slumps in his chair while four rats head for the exit signs. We recognize Amos Kendall and Martin Van Buren. The Alter of Reform, surmounted by a demon, tilts to one side. Resignations are plastered on the walls. A column marked "Public confidence in the stability and harmony of this administration" lists to one side. Measures 8.5" x 12.75". (2) H. R. Robinson of New York published this 16.375" x 13.375" cartoon in the 1830s. "A Globe To Live On!" depicts Francis Preston Blair and Amos Kendall. Kendall was Postmaster General in Jackson's Cabinet and former editor of The Argus of Western America and The Washington Globe. Blair was a member of Jackson's "Kitchen Cabinet" and succeeded Kendall as editor of The Globe. This cartoon shows them connected like Siamese twins and suggests that Kendall could steer subscribers to the newspaper through his Cabinet position.Condition: Both cartoons are adhered to backings and exhibit toning, light staining, and minor soiling throughout. The Jackson cartoon has extra wearing and loss at the edges exposing adhesive residue, and the trimmed edges are uneven. The cartoon featuring Blair and Kendall has a couple of tears at the edges.
