[Abraham Lincoln Assassination] Alexander Gardner Carte de Visite of the Execution of the Lincoln Conspirators [CDV]. A striking and scarce CDV with gold ruled border measuring 4" x 3". It is titled "Execution of the Conspirators, 7 July 1865. No. 4." with Gardner's copyright imprint below the title. "Gardner, Photographer" imprint with blue two cent revenue stamp to verso. Published by Philp & Solomons. The image shows the bodies of four of the Lincoln conspirators, Mary Surratt (at left in the black dress), Lewis Powell, David Herold, and George Atzerodt, hanging from the gallows in the yard of Fort McNair in Washington, D.C. Alexander Gardner captured the scene as a crowd of civilian and military spectators looked on from the yard and the wall behind. Lightly soiled with pencil notation to verso.
