Description

[Abraham Lincoln Assassination] Two Issues of the New York Daily Tribune from April 15, 1865. Included with these issues is a stately leather portfolio reading, "New York Tribune/ April 15, 1865/ Assassination of/ Abraham Lincoln" in gilt stamp. (1) New York Daily Tribune. April 15, 1865. Vol. XXV. No. 7,496. Eight pages. 15.625" x 20.75" This newspaper contains prominent page four headlines reading, "Highly Important!/ The President Shot!" There are three columns of dispatches from Washington, DC with hour by hour news of the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln. Interestingly, there are conflicting reports throughout these dispatches as to whether or not Lincoln has died. In the end, this issue has no definitive news report that Lincoln has died when the newspaper went to press. Very unusual to see an April 15, 1865 newspaper that covered Lincoln's assassination but does not definitively report that he had died. A rare and desirable assassination issue. Some wrinkling is present at the bottom edge, with light staining at the bottom and right side. Minor toning is present throughout and the left edge has small tears. Overall, this rare and desirable newspaper is in great condition. (2) "Evening Edition of the Tribune (New York Daily Tribune)." April 15, 1865. Vol. XXV. No. 7,496. Four pages. 16" x 21". This issue not only provides an article declaring Abraham Lincoln is still alive at 3 a.m. but also highlights Andrew Johnson's inauguration. Beneath the "First Evening Edition" title, are articles with the headlines "Death of the President" and "Arrest of John Wilkes Booth." On the same page is the "Second Evening Edition," celebrating the "Inauguration of Vice President Johnson as President of the United States." Included in the issue are the first and fourth pages of the day's New York Daily Tribune. Foxing and toning are present throughout, with some extra wear at the two intersecting folds. Some minor tearing and separation can be seen at the right and left edges where the horizontal fold is present. In overall good condition, the print remains bold.
