Description
Robert E. Lee: Albumen Photograph Taken One Week After His Surrender at Appomattox. Confederate General Robert E. Lee is featured in this Mathew Brady image sitting on the back porch of his Richmond, Va. home. His son General George Washington Custis Lee standing to his right, his longtime aide-de-camp, Walter Taylor, standing to his left. The photograph was taken on April 16, 1865, exactly one week after he surrendered at Appomattox, by famed Civil War photographer Mathew Brady. The piece has a full titled mount with "M.B. Brady & Co." at the left and "Washington D.C" at the right. Below it has an 1866 copyright date along with "GEN'L ROBT. E. LEE AND STAFF". More often than not this image is found in Carte de Visite format, but rarely, if ever, does it appear in this large format, with a titled mount. The albumen measures 7 1/2" x 8 3/4", and 9 5/8" x 12" overall with the titled mount. It's interesting to note that there are a few variants of this photograph. In this example Lee is sitting in a 3/4 profile pose, with his son's left arm not pictured on the back of the chair. The other variant has Lee is in a more face forward pose with the left arm of his son pictured. No matter which example you prefer, they are both prohibitively scarce.Condition: Albumen has insignificant nicks along the edge, retains excellent tone and detail. The mount has light age, which detracts little. The verso is darkly toned from prior framing. A fine example.
