Description
George B. McClellan: Glass & Tin Parade Lantern. 8.5" tall three-sided lantern issued to promote of the candidacy of General McClellan in his doomed effort against Abraham Lincoln. One side has a black & white lithograph of McClellan published by Louis Prang of Boston, affixed to the interior. A second side has a uninscribed sheet of green paper affixed to the exterior. The third side has a white paper panel inscribed "Little Mac." Some areas of loss, as shown, but the two important sides with design elements are virtually intact. There are no cracks in the glass panels which could be accessed by removal of the lid. The interior holds a single candle-holder. Glass & tin lanterns are, as a category, among the upper echelon of ninteenth century campaign artifacts, with very few survivors. We are aware of only one other example of this particular lantern (in poor condition,) part of an extensive lighting collection sold decades ago. No minimum bid.
