Description
Alfred S. Robinson: Thirty-Nine Assorted Privately Commissioned Medals. In 1968, J. Doyle DeWitt published a small handbook titled, "Alfred S. Robinson - Hartford Numismatist." This amazing lot of thirty-nine pieces is a collection of the tokens assembled by J. Doyle Dewitt, which no doubt aided by example in the writing of his manual on the Alfred S. Robinson series of historic medals and tokens. In addition to the thirty-nine tokens is a copy of the handbook itself written by author and collector, J. Doyle Dewitt. A unique and important archive! Please see extended description in the online catalog for more details regarding this lot.Condition: Medals in fine condition with minimal wear.
More Information: DeWitt intended the handbook titled, "Alfred S. Robinson - Hartford Numismatist" as a scholarly study into the medallic publications and issues ascribed to numismatist Alfred S. Robinson. In 1860, Robinson, twenty-four years of age and the son of a senior partner in the private banking firm of Bissell & Company, was charged with the task of editing a "Coin Book" being published by the bank. Having always had an interest in numismatics and being an avid collector himself, the task of editing a coin book simply fueled his interest in facsimile coins and historic medalets as a commercial venture. Later that same year, Robinson entered into a business arrangement with well-known Boston die cutter Joseph H. Merriam. Robinson commissioned Merriam to create a number of historic medals of limited edition using popular metals of the day including brass, copper, silver, and white metal. This archive is the culmination of J. Doyle DeWitt's ability to assemble and document these medals.
