Description
Charles Evans Hughes: Simply the Premier Single Portrait Button Variety for this Tough Candidate.Glorious, bold RWB design in 1 1/4" size. Latin slogans along with two shields bearing the wording "American Rights Protected and Respected" and "American Industry Promoted and Protected!" The Latin slogans, "Facta Non Verba" and "Labor Omnia Vincit" translate to "Deeds Not Words" and "Work Conquers All". Button paper on verso from the obscure maker, Ed. R. Goring of Waterville, Maine. Displays as near-mint, although on reverse side there is a little inconsequential light staining on the curl.
For decades this was believed to be the only known example, and it was regarded as one of the "signature" buttons in the Pressman Collection. However, a few years ago a second example was found and discreetly acquired privately by one of the hobby's leading collectors. That example is unlikely to appear on the open market in the foreseeable future, if ever, so this presents what is perhaps a literal once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to obtain what many would rank among the "top ten" buttons in the political hobby.
