Description

Abraham Lincoln: Large Lock of the Martyred President's Hair. The hair is encapsulated for protection within a clear plastic 2.875" x 4" case, with a separate label reading, "No. 3 Abraham Lincoln's hair clipped from his head at the tomb." The hair ranges from sandy to dark brown and is tied at the center with black string. The majority of the hair is approximately 2" in length.

Provenance includes reproduced copies of old auction listings, typed and handwritten letters, and black and white images, navigating the ownership of the hair. According to the papers, the lock of hair was once a part of the Oliver Barrett Collection before passing hands in auctions and reaching co-owners James T. Hickey, Curator of the Lincoln Collection of the Illinois State Historical Library, and R. Gerald McMurtry, the Director of the Lincoln National Life Foundation. After the hair was divided between the curator and director, Elsie O. and Phillip D. Sang acquired it from an unknown auction. The papers include a reproduced copy of a document showing Dr. Irene N. Sang's signature attesting to the hair's former presence in her grandparents' collection.

Condition: A few stray hairs have escaped the tie but are still within the case. The case has tape adhered to the sides and the bottom half. Very light scratching on the plastic's surface.
