Description

Abraham Lincoln and Charles Sumner: Original Watercolor Portraits by Pierre Morand. Featured are two full-length charming portraits, each measuring approximately 2.625" x 5.625". Abraham Lincoln appears stately in somber shades of gray and Charles Sumner is the definition of dapper in a peacock blue jacket with gold-colored buttons. The watercolors are adhered to an 8.5" x 10.625" flexible card stock with a penciled inscription at the bottom reading, "Drawn from life by Pierre Morand." Also included is a loose period mat bearing the subjects' and artist's names and date and a 10.875" x 14" catalog sleeve from Parke-Bernet Galleries Inc. with penciled notations including "Lot 488" and the date "1952."

Pierre Morand, French expatriate and acquaintance of Lincoln, is credited as the last artist to capture the assassinated president's likeness in-person, having sketched the president at his open coffin. Morand also traveled on the Britannia's maiden voyage in January of 1842, during which he sketched and painted fellow passenger Charles Dickens.

Condition: The two watercolors have very light paper abrasions and staining, none of which affect the portraits. Traces of adhesive and some toning are present on the watercolors' mount, and a piece of tape is in the top left corner. The mat has light staining at the top edge, and the sleeve has some tearing and light toning. Considering their age, these are still in very good condition.
