Description

Abraham Lincoln: Belfast, Maine, Wide Awake Parade Banner. This historically important cotton parade banner for Abraham Lincoln is easily one of the top five items in the DeWitt collection. Measuring 41" x 35", the hand-painted, multicolored, double-sided, shield-shaped textile proudly proclaims, "Victory is Ours/ Belfast Wide Awake Club." The reverse inscribed with the legend, "Lincoln/ 1860." Pictured on page 154 in Threads of History, one could not ask for a more evocative item for display. Not overwhelming in size therefore easily displayed, the colors remain true.

Condition: Well preserved throughout the passage of time, the fabric maintains its integrity, with just the right amount of patina to exude character. A trivial stain here and there, the banner speaks for itself as one of the most significant relics from a campaign that would elect a president who would alter the course of history!
