Description
Abraham Lincoln: Hair Relic Display. Two strands of hair, taken from a lock of hair given to Caroline Wright, the wife of Joseph A. Wright, Governor of Indiana, by Lincoln himself. Mrs. Wright collected hair from nineteenth-century political figures, and the hair sample was given as a token of friendship between the two families shortly after Lincoln's 1865 inauguration. The hair remained in possession of the family until auctioned by Christie's in 1992 and again as part of the Forbes Collection in 2002. Measuring at an overall size of 8" x 10", it is matted in burgundy and gold, with a modern printing of Lincoln's portrait identified as O-51 from Lincoln in Photographs: An Album of Every Known Pose by Charles Hamilton and Lloyd Ostendorf. The magnifying window to view the strands of hair measures 1" x 1" and is positioned below the photograph, alongside a 1909 Lincoln penny. It is accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity from the Historical Shop of Metairie, Louisiana.Condition: Excellent.
