Description

Van Buren & Adams: Jugate Grand National Banner. Small folio [10" x 14"] hand-colored lithograph published by Nathaniel Currier in 1848, titled "Grand Democratic Free Soil Banner." The Temple of Liberty appears beneath an eagle and the slogan "Free Soil. Free Labor. Free Speech." (shades of Frémont and the Republicans of 1856!) The Van Buren & Adams ticket took enough votes away from Cass in New York State to swing the state to Taylor, thereby costing Cass the election. Housed in a plain ogee frame (not examined outside of frame). This is one of the rarest in the "Grand National Banner" series. It features a former President and a son of a former President... pretty good pedigree!
