Description

[Charles Sumner]: Senate Floor Caning and Assassination Attempt Broadside. On May 22, 1856 Massachusetts Senator and staunch abolitionist Charles Sumner was famously and brutally attacked in the Senate Chamber by pro-slavery Representative Preston Brooks from South Carolina. The attack coming just days after Sumner delivered his "Crime Against Kansas" speech. Battered about the head and bleeding profusely after the nearly minute-long beating with a metal-topped cane, Sumner had to be carried away from the chamber having sustained very serious injuries. Sumner never really recovered from that attack and convalesced for three years before returning to the Senate floor. Preston Brooks was arrested for assault and died suddenly eight months later from a violent attack of croup. Brooks was only 37 years old.
This rare and extraordinary broadside, the only one of which we are aware speaking directly to this infamous incident, is testimony to the outrage from Sumner's home State of Massachusetts to the attack which is characterized as an assassination attempt!

Condition: The broadside measures 19" x 11.5" (sight) and is custom framed to an overall dimension of 20.5" x 13", has not been examined out of frame. The broadside exhibits expected age with light creasing, no visually significant tears or loss. The broadside displays extremely well with bold lettering and evocative content. A highly important piece of history worthy of the most advanced collection or deserving institution.
