Description
John Adams and Thomas Jefferson: A Significant Broadside, Signed in Print, Dealing with Trade with France During a Period of Hostilities. 8" x 13", 3 pp., dated February 27, 1800, titled "An Act to Further suspend the commercial intercourse between the United States and France, and the dependencies thereof."Beginning with the capture of an American schooner in 1798, a period of hostilities with America's former ally ensued during which France seized over 300 U.S. merchant vessels, and a state of undeclared war existed between the two countries. This was the time of the infamous "XYZ Affair," in which French agents demanded a large bribe to bring an end to the French predations.
Overall condition is excellent, with minor light age toning and minimal slight edge roughness. Three horizontal creases, as issued for distribution in an envelope. A historic broadside with fine display appeal.
