Description
Henry Clay: Impressive "Prize Banner" Silk Broadside. Threads #172. Titled: "Grand National Whig Prize Banner Badge." Most often seen in print or ribbon format, this is the far superior 12" x 17" version on white silk. It shows the elaborate hand-painted banner made by John Gade and William Curlett, used at the Whig Nominating Convention held in Baltimore on May 2, 1844. Members of the "Whig Banner Committee" are listed with a description of the reverse of the banner which depicted all twenty-six state seals, captioned "The Union. Our strong defence; To Foes impregnable, Priceless to friends." The actual banner (current whereabouts unknown) was awarded to the state delegation with the proportionally largest attendance at the convention. Printed by Edward Weber of Baltimore. One small area of loss in the lower blank border, one small stain along the cross-bar of the banner and very minor discoloration along top and right edges from previous mounting. Excellent condition overall with lovely sheen.Auction Info
