Franklin D. Roosevelt. Typed letter signed ("Franklin D. Roosevelt") as Governor. 1 page, (8 x 10.5 inches), Albany, New York, April 21, 1932, to George F. Alexander, President of the Franklin D. Roosevelt for President League, Inc. On personalized Franklin D. Roosevelt "State of New York Executive Chamber" stationery. Paperclip indentation at upper left corner. Some light creasing throughout.Governor Roosevelt apologizes before expressing his gratitude to the loyal supporter who was the first in the nation to formally file a petition putting his name on the presidential primary ballot.
Roosevelt writes, in full:
My dear Mr. Alexander: - I find that I owe you an apology - several of them. Your courteous letter informing me of the filing of my name in the Oregon Primaries reached me during an exceptionally strenuous session of the New York State Legislature and was laid aside for a more personal reply than I could give it at the moment. In some way it became misfiled, and so you had neither an answer nor the message you requested for the banquet held on my birthday. The letter has just been brought to my attention by Mr. Farley, who has had, I know, much pleasant correspondence with you, and I want you to know how chagrined I am to find that I have treated you with such unintentional rudeness. Of course, I have heard from time to time from Mr. Farley of the progress of matters in Oregon, and I just want to tell you that we all appreciate your loyal support. Yours very sincerely, Franklin D. Roosevelt.
George F. Alexander was a staunch democratic lawyer from Portland, Oregon who served as president of the "Franklin D. Roosevelt for President League." His father, Joshua W. Alexander, served as Secretary of Commerce for President Woodrow Wilson. On January 12, 1932, Alexander formally launched Roosevelt's candidacy by filing a petition to place his name on the Democratic presidential primary ballot in Oregon. He was the first in the nation to do so. As evidenced by this letter, a chagrined but grateful Roosevelt apologizes for not replying to Alexander's earlier letter in which he informed the governor of his intention. FDR personally announced his candidacy to the nation just a few days after Alexander's petition.
