Description

Zachary Taylor: "Rough and Ready" Ogee Mantel Clock. Standard size ogee mantel clock with reverse-glass panel in the door depicting the 1848 Whig candidate for President, Zachary Taylor. He is depicted in military uniform in profile, beneath a golden eagle, flanked by draped flags, captioned "Rough And Ready". The panel was made using stenciling in conjunction with hand-painting. There are some scattered chips in the paint, but nothing serious. The glass panel itself is totally intact, which is a rare occurrence in itself. The interior of the clock has a partial paper label for the manufacturer, George Marsh of Winchester, Connecticut. It appears to have a spring-wound mechanism, but we don't know if it is currently in working order. There are screw-eyes and a wire at the top, added later, for suspension purposes. It is in excellent overall condition. These presidential clocks were popular in the 1830-1850 period. We can't recall seeing any other examples for Taylor.
From the collection of Robert and Julie Sterling.
