Description
[George Washington]: 1848 National Birth-Night Ball Invitation Listing Abraham Lincoln and Jefferson Davis as Managers. 7.5" x 12", with a lithographed portrait of George Washington at center and the facsimile of his signature below. The engraving by G & W Endicott is a scarce and handsome portrait of Washington which suitably dignifies the center of this invitation to the National Birth-Night Ball at Jackson Hall on the night of February 22, 1848. The list of managers in attendance includes newly elected Congressman Abraham Lincoln and his future Civil War adversary Jefferson Davis. Future president James Buchanan, then serving as Secretary of State in the Polk administration appears in the top two lines of names. The sponsors of the event include: Mrs. James K. Polk, Mrs. James Madison, Mrs. J. Q. Adams, and Mrs. Alexander Hamilton. Tragically, former president John Quincy Adams suffered a stroke on February 21st dying just two days later and forcing a postponement of the celebration until March 1st out of respect for Adams and his family. The invitation is addressed to "Mrs. Dummer," wife of then Jersey City mayor Phineas Dummer, and a "Miss Cleave." An exceedingly rare engraved invitation which includes a veritable who's who of political giants of the day!Condition: Light toning, small tear at top left, minor creases. A very rare Lincoln and Davis related invitation.
