Description

James Madison: 1808 Philadelphia Presidential Election Circular. 8" x 10" bifolium printed circular, addressed as a stampless cover, Philadelphia, September 10, 1808. An interesting document issued in the lead-up to the Presidential election, voicing concerns over the threat caused by England. It also seeks to have statewide candidates declare themselves in favor of the "Washington nomination" of "James Madison for president and George Clinton for vice-president." Supposedly, some voters have threatened not to vote for statewide candidates unless they come out publicly in favor of the Madison and Clinton ticket. Signed by William Duane and Thomas Leifer. Outside of some items related to the Embargo of 1808, we have seen no campaign items for Madison-no ballots, no handbills, nothing!

Condition: Light age, overall fine.
