Description

John Adams: Spectacular Pewter Rim Medallion. Among the most prized of smalls in early nineteenth century political collectibles are these highly sought-after medallions with glass encased paper engravings sealed between a metal collar, and known as "pewter rims." This one has a colorful paper pasteboard on the verso reminiscent of designs used on bandboxes of the day. Most were issued with suspension loops at the top, present here, but absent on most pewter rims. The portrait, an engraving by James Barton Longacre, is after a painting done by Gilbert Stuart. The pewter rim is 3.25" and 0.188" thick, and is in superb condition! No minimum bid. From the J.Doyle Dewitt Collection.
