Description
George Washington: An Extremely Rare Variant of the Familiar "Linked States" Inaugural Button. It differs from the familiar version in two significant respects: around the border is an ornate decoration, consisting of three small incise lines between each link. Also, this example originally had a gilded surface. The wear on the gilding is remarkably even and visually attractive, as the photo shows. It has survived in all the recesses and is only a little gone from the "G W" script letters at center. Condition is excellent, with a very slightly granular surface to the metal on careful examination. WI-4b, 34mm gilded brass. Replacement shank. From a visual perspective, it would be difficult to improve on this specimen! From the Brook Mahoney Collection of George Washington Inaugural Buttons.Auction Info
