Description

John Wilkes Booth: Cartes-de-Visite. In his lifetime, Father Robert Keesler of St. Mary of the Mills Church in Laurel, Maryland assembled one of the country's finest collections of carte-sized images of John Wilkes Booth and Booth's associates. In 1996, Donald P. Dow purchased the Keesler Collection almost intact from Don Kemp, a Maryland-based collector who had obtained it from Father Keesler. The collection contained approximately 40 images which we are offering in this and the succeeding ten lots. There are four Booth cartes in this premier lot. It includes a ¾ standing view of Booth pressing one hand against his chest, a less dramatic ¾ standing pose with Booth resting one hand upon a book, a pensive seated pose titled "John Wilkes Booth" with the annotation "... who shot Lincoln" below, and another example showing Booth seated in a Gothic-style chair with Case & Getchell credit and back mark.
