Description

1827 Charleston SERVANT Slave Hire Badge, Number 382. A convex diamond-shaped tag with clipped corners and a hole at the top for suspension, 68mm x 70mm. "LAFAR" hallmark punched at bottom on the reverse indicating manufacture by Charleston silversmith John Joseph Lafar. The elements on the obverse are as follows (top to bottom): "*CHARLESTON*" (second * missing) in a crescent-shaped bar punch; "No" in a square punch ("o" light) followed by an incuse "382" in large individual punches; "SERVANT" in a rectangular punch; and "1827" bar punched. Very fine appearance with a couple of minor edge notches. Attractive bright surface with dark green and brown patina and large size makes it a great piece for display.
