Description
USS Hammerhead (SS-364).USS Hammerhead (SS-364), a Gato-class submarine commissioned in March of 1944, was the first ship of the United States Navy to be named for the hammerhead shark; named for the unusual and distinctive structure of their heads, which are flattened and laterally extended into a cephalofoil, which resembles a hammer silhouette when viewed from above. This feature is thought to make them a more efficient hunter of prey.
The ensign of the Hammerhead is an Annin Defiance brand cotton flag with 48-machine embroidered stars and sewn stripes, finished with a white canvas header with two white metal wartime grommets. The obverse hoist is marked: "7 war Patrols 7 Battle stars", a maker's mark and "Hammerhead." Embroidered flags like this example were introduced in late in the war.
Her first war patrol was out of Pearl Harbor, but all her others emanated from Fremantle, Australia. Her war patrols took her to the Sea of Formosa, the South China Sea, the Java Sea, the Indochina Coast and the Gulf of Siam. The Hammerhead's battle flag boasts five warships and fourteen merchant ships sunk. Her most successful war patrol was her second when she attacked and sank five and damaged three enemy ships, for which she was awarded her navy unit Commendation. This flag would make a welcome addition to a WWII submarine or Pacific War collection.
Navy Unit Commendation; Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with seven campaign stars; World War II Victory Medal.
The flag is in Good to Excellent condition - it is used, worn and soiled, but otherwise complete.
This flag was formerly in the collection of Dr. Clarence Rungee, and is accompanied by his original museum inventory sheet with identifying information.
For those who did not receive a hard copy of the auction catalog, we present here the introductory comments and history of Dr. Rungee and his remarkable collection. If you scroll further, you will also find various contemporary newspaper articles, as well as a selection of the many letters of donation and transmittal which accompanied the collection and a categorization of the collection.
