Description

Samuel J. Tilden: 1876 Election Fraud Broadside. Rather ironic 10" x 13" broadside, issued just prior to the presidential election (November 2, 1876), in which sitting New York Governor and Presidential candidate Samuel Tilden issues a proclamation urging district attorneys to enforce the "recently adopted constitutional provisions" against "Bribery at Elections". The bottom of the broadside has what amounts to an endorsement by Montgomery County D.A. Dunkel, assuring his compliance. As it turns out, the election was "stolen" from Tilden. The problem as not so much bribery, but rather voter intimidation in the Reconstruction South. Usual folds. Excellent condition.
