Description

Carried on Utah Beach on D-Day.

90th "Tough Hombres"Division: Personal Flag of Major Simson.
This 48-star, 5'x 8' Dettra "Bulldog" brand cotton flag has sewn stripes and stars, finished with a canvas header and brass grommets, indicating pre-war manufacture. It is marked on the obverse header in black ink, "From K of C Flag Used by Maj. Simson 90th DIV Landed Utah Beach Normandy 6 June 1944 Wounded 8 June" - "Bulge Battle 5 Jan '45 Wounded - Carried Flag to Berlin."

This is Simson's personal flag. These were acquired privately and carried to war by officers and enlisted alike. Popular in all theaters of the war, they were often displayed as Camp Flags, an unofficial and non-ceremonial flag, and used by a unit, regiment, or higher echelon organization near the position of their headquarters, within a camp or other location.

This flag was acquired by a Major Simson of the 90th Division from the Knights of Columbus. It was carried ashore on D-Day, 6 June 1944, Major Simson was likely a member of the 359th Infantry, the only element of the 90th to land on D-Day right behind the initial assault elements.

This flag accompanied the 90th in their breakout of the hedgerow country; during their march across France to the Saar River, until the German winter offensive began. It participated in the Battle of the Bulge until offensive operation began on 5 Jan. 1945, where Major Simson was wounded again. The 90th went into the Ardennes, broke through the Siegfried Line, took the city of Mainz, crossed the Rhine and were on their way to Prague when the war ended. Major Simson eventually took the flag into a liberated Berlin.

Condition: The flag is used, worn, soiled but otherwise intact save for a tear in the upper fly corner.

This flag was formerly in the collection of Dr. Clarence Rungee, and is accompanied by his original museum inventory sheet with identifying information.
