Description

Amelia Earhart and husband, publisher and promoter G.P. Putnam, on their way home following Earhart's triumphant 1932 tour of Europe after her historic Trans-Atlantic Solo Flight

[Amelia Earhart]. Original Black and White Photograph of Amelia and her husband, G. P. Putnam, on the return from her record-breaking Trans-Atlantic flight. SS Ile de France, June 14, 1932. Inscribed and signed by Earhart and Putnam. Original black and white photograph, measuring 9 x 6.75 inches. Minor edgewear, minor chipping, two approximately 1-inch closed tears to the bottom edge, pencil notation on verso, lightly scratched. Signed by Amelia and George, "To Mr. William / Amelia Earhart / G.P. Putnam." Ink stamp, "June 14 1932, Ile de France," and light pencil notation on verso.

"On May 20, 1932, Earhart thrust herself center-stage on the international aviation scene by again flying across the Atlantic, this time not as a 'sack of potatoes' but alone in her single-engine Lockheed Vega. Thirteen hours and 30 minutes after leaving Newfoundland she became the first woman to have flown solo across the Atlantic. She was an international sensation, and her husband [G.P. Putnam] joined her for a triumphant tour of Europe," (Long).

Amelia was now the spotlight of the international aviation scene; on her tour she was received by the Pope, entertained by royalty, and visited with governments throughout Europe. On the heels of this triumphant moment, Amelia and G.P. boarded the Ile de France and began their journey home, where this picture was taken.

A peaceful moment between breaking records, featuring Amelia and George together out on the deck, Amelia comfortably bundled up with a book in hand and George with a stack of files, no doubt already planning their next adventure.

Long, Amelia Earhart, The Mystery Solved, pages 46-47.

Provenance: From the estate of record-breaking aviator, Amelia Earhart author and researcher Elgen M. Long and his wife, fellow Earhart scholar, Marie K. Long.
