Description
Abraham Lincoln: Signed Military Appointment. March 4, 1863 document on vellum appointing Joseph E. Stearns "Assistant Adjutant General of Volunteers with the rank of Captain", signed by Abraham Lincoln and Edwin M. Stanton. Blue paper seal. Both signatures are clear and bold. Top corners trimmed away, affecting a tombstone shape, to an overall size of 13 ¾" x 17 ½". A very clean example. Stearns enlisted at the age of 21 on April 20, 1861 at the very start of the war. He served in companies "B" and "F" of the Ohio 21st Infantry, as well as the U.S. Volunteers Adjutant General Department.Auction Info
