Description
"The most colorful portraits of Indians ever executed" - Howes
Thomas L. McKenney [and James Hall]. History of the
Indian Tribes of North America, with Biographical Sketches and
Anecdotes of the Principal Chiefs. Embellished with One Hundred
Portraits from the Indian Gallery in the War Department at
Washington. Philadelphia: D. Rice & Co., 1872.2 volumes, 8vo. Bound in half red crushed morocco and green cloth stamped in gilt. Complete with 99 inserted chromolithographic plates and tissue guards, some plates highlighted in gum arabic. Though the title page calls for "one hundred portraits," only 99 are listed in the contents: 61 plates in volume I and 38 plates in volume II.
The first edition of this celebrated work was published in three elephant folio volumes in 1837 and featured 120 hand-colored lithographic plates. The first octavo edition, also in three volumes, was published in 1850. At least seven octavo editions were published in the 19th century, all with 120 plates. The present set comprises the first abridged octavo edition with 21 fewer plates than previous editions.
"M'Kenney's plates are generally conceded to be the outstanding Indian Gallery. Hall, a noted writer on Western subjects, supplied sound text" (Bennett).
Condition: Bindings rubbed and worn. Modern ex-libris bookplates to front pastedowns covering previous bookplates. Scattered dampstaining to textblock, generally confined to the margins and not affecting plates, volume II over-opened. Some offsetting from plates, a few tissue guards starting but holding, plate no. 32 in volume I with loss in upper margin, not affecting plate.
References: Bennett, page 79 (first edition); Field 992 (first edition); Howes M-129 (listing octavo editions up to 1870); Reese, Stamped with a National Character, 24 (first edition); Sabin 43411 (for the first octavo edition published in 1848-1850).
