Description

Zachary Taylor: A Very Rare Silk Ribbon Depicting Him on Horseback. Perhaps because his campaign tokens are varied and comparatively numerous there has long been a tendency to under-rate Taylor's ribbons. The most obtainable is an inaugural design later modified as a memorial ribbon, and even that variety has auction record upwards of $2000. Sullivan & Fischer list eleven varieties, but were only able to picture five of those. The present design is listed, but unpictured, as ZT-7 (p. 92). The Don Warner catalog included the only other example we've seen (lot 50). Our guess would be that, excluding the Inaugural design, not more than perhaps two to three dozen Taylor ribbons of all varieties have survived.
This is an especially desirable style, with bold graphics and the only equestrian portrait. Condition is excellent but for one stain in lower left-hand corner as shown. Appears to have been slightly trimmed at the bottom, but plenty of white space remains. 3" x 7.5". From the Merrill C. Berman Collection.
