Description

José Cisneros. Dragoon on Horseback. Original pen and ink drawing. 8.75" x 11.5" (sight), matted and framed to an overall 17" x 20.75". Signed "J. Cisneros / Paisano" in ink at lower left. Fine.

José Cisneros, one of the truly great twentieth-century Texas artists and illustrators, was renowned for his impeccable, historically-accurate depictions of the Southwest - particularly those concerning the Paso del Norte region of Cisneros' adopted hometown of El Paso. "Like Tom Lea, José Cisneros is devoted to authentic historical detail in his art. His scholarly achievement is made all the more remarkable by his lack of opportunity for a formal education. He is master of an incredible wealth of information reading the costumes, heraldry, weapons, and accoutrements of the Spanish borderlands-especially of its horsemen. . . . [He] is an historian no less than an artist" (Lowman, Printing Arts in Texas, p. 19). He was knighted by King Juan Carlos of Spain in 1991 for his contributions to Spanish culture in the New World, and he was awarded the National Humanities Medal in 2007 by President George W. Bush. José Cisneros died in El Paso in 2009 at the age of ninety-nine.
