Description
Skylab II (SL-3) Original Embroidered "Wives Patch" Mission Insignia, Unflown, Directly from the Personal Collection of Mission Pilot Jack Lousma, with Signed COA. A 4" round patch featuring a humorous takeoff of the official mission insignia which featured Leonardo da Vinci's "Vitruvian Man". The wives of the crew, as a joke, secretly had their own patch created showing a "Universal Woman" and replacing the crew's surnames with their forenames, Sue, Helen-Mary, and Gratia. This patch is one of the original group produced. As new condition.Jack Lousma commented on these decals in Dick Lattimer's book, All We Did is Fly to the Moon (Gainesville: Whispering Eagle Press, 1985): "The first time we saw the 'wives' patch was when we arrived in orbit and began to open the storage lockers in the Command Module to get our gear out. Neatly pasted to the interior of three of these locker doors were decals of the 'wives' patch. This was a great idea and consistent with one of our mottoes, 'Never lose your sense of humor.'" (page 107)
Included with this lot is a letter of authenticity signed "Jack Lousma" on his letterhead, stating (in full): "I hereby certify that the accompanying embroidered Wives' Patch, although unflown, is one of the very few original patches created secretly before the mission by the wives of the Skylab II (SL-3) crew members. Three of the emblems, in sticker form, were first discovered by the crew on the insides of Command Module locker doors when equipment was removed and transferred into the Skylab Space Station. This Wives' Patch is from my personal collection and has been in my possession since the mission."
