Description

Skylab II (SL-3) Flown Biblical Scripture Book Directly from the Personal Collection of Mission Pilot Jack Lousma, Signed and Certified, with Signed COA. A paperback book titled Living Psalms and Proverbs With The Major Prophets Paraphrased (Wheaton Illinois:Tyndale House Publishers, 1971- Tenth printing), 4.25" x 6.75", 745 pages. This was read on the Skylab Space Station by Lousma during his personal devotional periods; he has signed on the front free endpaper: "Flown and read/ on Skylab II./ Jack Lousma". Very good condition.

Included with this lot is a letter of authenticity signed "Jack Lousma" on his letterhead, stating (in full): "It was, and is on Earth, my practice to augment my devotional life by reading and meditating daily on words from the Bible. For the Skylab II (SL-3) mission, I included this book, 'Living Psalms and Proverbs', within a small weight and volume allowance reserved for each crewman. This paraphrased version of the Scriptures into contemporary language is a small section of the Holy Bible known in total as the 'Living Bible' by the same paraphraser. I especially enjoy reading the Proverbs; just 'Down to Earth' guidelines for daily living. This book was actually in space longer than I was because it was launched aboard the Skylab Space Station on May 14, 1973 by the Saturn V rocket and known as mission SL-1. I launched to rendezvous with the Skylab on July 28, 1973. This book splashed down in the Pacific Ocean with me on September 25, 1973 after what was, for a short time, a record-setting human spaceflight endurance mission of nearly two months."
